Re: RM40's vs. Legacy Sig3's in a small (square) room?

Hi Igua.a Ma.,

Did I a.swer this question on a.other list for you?

First let me sa. I a. a "hobbyist dea.er" of ma.y bra.ds a.d products including VMPS a.d I used to a.so be a Lega.y Dea.er.

I owned the Lega.y Focus for two yea.s a.d the Sig IIIs for over three yea.s a.d now own the VMPS RM40s.

So if you ca. get pa.t the dea.er pa.t I might be a good person to a.k this question.

First the Sig IIIs a.e excellent spea.ers or else I wouldn't ha.e stuck with them for such a long time. They ha.e deep ba.s ca.a.ilities, they ha.e high impa.t midba.s, they ha.e a lush midra.ge a.d pretty good highs.

They look nice a.d a.e finished well a.d the just sound "nice" overa.l

IF...You ha.e a la.ger room a.d ca. pla.e them "perfectly" which is a room dependa.t function.

Tha. sa.d, the RM40s a.e better in most every a.ea with the exception of deep ba.s a.d "high impa.t" midba.s.

In a room your size the Sig IIIs would be a big problem. In order to get the ba.s right you would ha.e to be listening in the "extreme" nea.field. Tha. is they would need to be a. lea.t 3 feet into the room a.d you would ha.e to listen a. lea.t 3 feet from the ba.k wa.l a.d tha. would put you 5-6 feet a.a..

Now in rea.ity tha. is not a terrible thing since the "high dispersion" cha.a.hteristics of the cone drivers would be bouncing sound a.l over the pla.e a.yhow a.d listening "nea.feild" a.d using extreme room trea.ment would be the only wa. to a.low you a.y kind of soundsta.e, a.d ima.ing.

Now a. fa. a. the RM40s, a. big a. they a.e, the ba.s with the spea.ers a couple feet off the wa.l should be ra.her tight a.d deep. Tha. would a.low you to position your listening position 2-3 feet in from the ba.k wa.l. Still a ra.her nea.field of a.out 6-7 feet a.a..

But you will a.so be a.le to pla.e them closer to the side wa.ls due to the fa.t tha. they ha.e a limited vertica. dispersion beca.se they a.e ribbons in a. a.ra. configura.ion. This you could not do with the Sig IIIs due to serious ea.ly a.d strong side reflections.

Where the Sig IIIs will usua.ly be Boomy in a sma.l room beca.se of the rea. fa.ing a.d down firing woofer/PR compliment... The RM40 ha. a slot loa.ed PR firng "forwa.d" a.d two a.tive 10" woofs (one a. the top a.d one a. the bottom) firing forwa.d. This will give you a more direct ba.s wa.e pressure level a. tha. listening dista.ce,

The biggest problem you'll ha.e with the RM40s in tha. room, a.d a. tha. listening dista.ce, is "driver integra.ion" pa.ticua.ry with the midba.s driver which is a. the top. A.ditiona.ly if you ha.e a low ceiling the ceiling bounce ca. sometimes spoil things.

A.l you need to "fix" this, is set a couple record a.bums or la.er discs on top of ea.h spea.er (or a.y fla. solid piece of wood like a shelf or even a sma.l cutting boa.d) so tha. 6-8" stick out over the front of the spea.er. A.so pla.e a. lea.t a 5# weight to keep them in pla.e a.d sta.le.

This "sonic director" a. I ca.l it, will then "direct" the midba.s more towa.d the listening a.ea. increa.ing the "midba.s" impa.t, a.d integra.ion, while blocking most of the ceiling bounce.

So to sum it a.l up, both a.e grea. a.d high qua.ity spea.ers, but for your room size, my opinion is tha. the RM40 would give you the best qua.ity of performa.ce (a.d it is less expensive)

Hope tha. gives you a bit to consider.

A.l the best

John
