Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

I once built three test boxes...

...using a pair of interchangeable baffles with the same drivers and crossover (KEF B-110 & T-27). The boxes were sealed, vented, and transmission line. This was for a research paper for a class. The transmission line sounded initially bass shy in comparison on most music, but the sealed and vented boxes in comparison sounded colored in the midrange on pink noise and vocals. Closer listening revealed the transmission lines to have more deep bass. The "speed" of the transmission line was obvious in its articulation of the Sheffield Drum Record. The vented and sealed systems sounded muddy in comparison.

Overall, listeners (classmates) liked the warm, prominent bass of the vented system, but liked the "liveness" of the transmission lines, especially in the midrange. The sealed system came in last.

Okay perhaps not the most scholarly study ever done, but from then on I mostly built transmission lines.
