Re: B&W 804 or JMLabs 926 or Von Schweikert VR4-JR

I happen to have the B&W N804s (paired with Ayre equipment) and am extremely pleased with my system. However, I must warn you that the upstream equipment can make or break the sound of almost any really high quality speaker including the N804s. Any of the speakers you mentioned may sound completely different and less pleasing to you if your electronics differ much from what they were paired with in the shop. For example, the N804s and other N series B&W speakers have often been described as sounding too bright or harsh, as if it were the fault of the speaker -- in fact this is hardly the case. Paired with really good equipment, the N804s are capable of extremely good sound with plenty of detail, dynamic range and a soundstage to die for. The problem is some people simply think that buying a really good speaker and then pairing them with any "reasonably good" amp or receiver as long as it has "plenty of watts" is the key to audio nirvana. WRONG! If you want the speakers that you eventually end up buying to sound anything like what you expect, you must pay very close attention to your other equipment.
