Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Thought on B&W's

I have the matrix 804's and have heard every speaker in the new Nautilus 800's line. All I can say is I've had my Matix 804's for 11 years now, and I still like them. Some on this forum think they are bright, some audiphiles think B&W is midfi. I think the whole Nautilus line and the Matrix line are fine fine performers. As far as "what is true", there is no such thing in my opinion. The most accurate component or speaker will sound different with each recording meaning it has less of its own sonic signature. But let's face it, speaker brands have their own sonic signature. I've been shopping for a new amplifier lately, and have listened to a few speakers, and I kind of like the sound of Spendor speakers. British speakers( like the B&W's and the Spendors) have a lot in common. Huge soundstage, precise imaging, and "pace and rhythm" The spendors are "warmer", less "bright" and vary less in impedance (only varies between 8 and 7 ohms; B&W's dip down to 4; both have sensitivity of around 89db), making amplification easier. When it comes down to it spend some time with those three you like--at least a weekend--in your home and listen to a variety of recordings. Whichever makes you want to listen to music and not to sound is the one that will find a happy place in your home, as long as it has the other audiophile stuff you want. As a B&W fan, I'm biased, and have not heard the other two, but it sounds like you are gonna have a nice pair of speakers whichever you choose.

Good luck,
--Jack
