I'll start by saying that the N804s may not be your cup of tea. IMO, if you do not like the sound, no amount of tweaking is gonna help. But, from your description - there's a lotta good going on with your speakers...
"...I have finally attained a smooth, even sound that is very impressive."
"...the bass is accurate and tight, the midrange is incredible, and I am experiencing a level of reproduction from my CDs and vinyl I have never experienced before..."
"But the sound I am hearing sounds rich, balanced and what I would expect from a high end system."I had a very similar situation - except with B&W 9NTs. Everything sounded "right" but I was not emotionally connected to the music. I solved the problem by integratig a sub. I discovered that for me - the extra low bass (under 40Hz) adds a degree of "warmth" and "texture" to the music that brings everything together. After integrating a sub, I found myself emotionally enjoying the music rather than listening to the music.
Finally, please do not take internet bashing of any speakers too seriously. Everyone has an opinion and is welcome to express it. There are some well known B&W bashers. B&W is somewhat of an easy target because they are so well known. But name any speaker and I promise you it has faults. The goal is to find speakers that you enjoy. Maybe B&W is not for you - but I encourage you to try integrating a sub before you give up on them.
Good luck.
