You're not completely out of luck -- there are some speaker manufacturers who sell direct to the public and have pretty liberal return policies. I can't speak for Vandersteens, but a good example would be Tyler Acoustics (check out their website). They supposedly have an excellent rep and are great to do business with. Their speakers are quite highly regarded by people on this forum. Another example may be Jeff Joseph speakers -- another fine product. He doesn't sell directly but if you live at a distance from an authorized dealer, he can facilitate getting his speakers to your home for you. Several internet-based dealers, such as Galen Carol, also are extremely good to deal with and offer a number of highly-regarded speaker lines. I can't speak personally about their-in home trial policies, but this is something you could discuss with them before ordering. The down side for you, of course, is that you have to deal with the hassle of waiting for delivery and then re-shipping if the speaker doesn't suit you -- but at least you have a chance to hear them in your home, which apparently is not often the case with local dealers! Incidentally, not all B&W dealers are stingy with loaning out their products for home listening.
