You're jumping to conclusions too fast -- just because you've read some unfavorable comments about N804s in this forum doesn't necessarily mean they are as "flawed" as some people would imply. Don't believe everything you read here -- the so-called "experts" are no better at judging speakers than you or I. There are quite a few people (myself included) who actually find the N804s to be a very nice, good-sounding speaker. Let your ears be the final judge. I won't disagree, however, that maybe the N804s really aren't the best for you -- but why pick just the Vandersteens as the only alternative? If you really think the B&Ws are the problem, you need to prove it yourself by listening to a reasonable number of different speakers in your own home with your own equipment. If you don't, you will certainly end up frustrated again and wondering where you went wrong. One last thing - you mentioned you had a small room. That itself could be a problem -- maybe a smaller standmounted speaker would be best. The N804s do work well in small to medium-sized rooms, but still need some "breathing space" to sound their best, I believe.
