Of course this term is a bit subjective. I would first draw upon personal experience and couple that with an informed imagination.
I might then proceed to make an educated guess about how any recording "soundstage" should be. Armed with the proper knowledge, I might be pretty close to being right in my educated guessing much of the time. Or so I would suppose...
If I actually had a hand in the making of the recording I am listening to in my home or studio I would know more exactly how the soundstage at hand should present itself. Or so one would hope.
