Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Speakers that never bite ? They just ain't right.

Real musical instruments (and some human voices) are hurtful to the ears on occasion.

Think about the sounds of cymbals, brass horns, steel guitars, banjos, electric guitars, etc.., in real life. Or possibly, the singing voice of someone like Del McCoury. In all these things I hear the occasional ouch.

Interesting that the late J. Gordon Holt chose ATC SCM 50 active pro monitors as his favorite speakers for overall good sound.

So I ask: Do your speakers EVER hurt your ears ? Do they ALWAYS sound mellow and enjoyable ?

If your answers to the above questions are "No" and "Yes", then your speakers and/or the recordings you are listening to are probably not doing their respective jobs very well.
