I think it's just as you pointed out ... a studio!
really, that seems to be the qualifier
it used to mean a 'smallish' speaker that was ruthlessly revealing + ugly
so, a minimal crossover box that tended to 'beam' right in your face
that's been lost along the way and the term is just 'marketing speak' now
as you said, it's become synonymous with the term 'stand mount speaker'
and added in to lend cachet for 'accuracy'
