Burn-in techniques

Dear Keith,

Four weeks is relatively short when considering how people prize BBC LS35A's which sound their best after over 20 years of use.

The Signum manual states that the speakers will continue to improve through the years, as the wood "ages" and as the surrounds and spiders become more flexible. The is good AND bad news, depending on which end of Time you are looking at it from!

Music with a wide range of frequencies will serve for burning in, so the drivers can have a complete workout. However, the burn-in signals from the XLO CD (and Cardas too I think) will significantly accelerate the burn-in process, as the white noise in the signal spans the entire audible spectrum. Unlike musical signals, the burn in tone continuously intense. The sine tone sweep also accentuates every frequency in series. This exercises the drivers more rigorously than most musical signals.

Why don't you burn in the new speaker cables with the Signums?

If you are worried about disturbing family and neighbours, you might use this old trick from Star Trek:

-----------------------

1. Play the burn-in signal (or some monophonic music)through the Signums. Make sure the SPL produced is NOT MORE than 70dB. Excessive continuous current can burn out your voice coil. The Signum can definitely handle much more than 70dB continuously, but this is just to be cautious.

2. Turn off the amplifier and face the two Signums towards each other, so the front baffles are touching.

2. Wire just ONE of the Signums in opposite phase: positive cable lead to negative speaker terminal; negative cable lead to positive speaker terminal.

3. Turn on the amplifier and play the burn-in tone (or use monophonic, not stereophonic music). The sound from both speakers should now cancel each other out, even though the drivers are moving vigorously, as they are directly out of phase. Won't work with stereo music though.

4. Any residual sound can be easily muffled by covering the signums with thick towels or winter coats. They won't sound louder than a slight whisper.

5. From within this silent cocoon, a beautiful new pair of mature Signums will emerge in a few weeks.

Perform this procedure with care, and enjoy!

Nolan
