OT - Ahem! The MR2 is a p*sspoor copy of Porsche's Mid Engine Cars

Sorry if your post was tongue-in-cheek. The current MR2 is seriously underpowered, has NO storage space, and doesn't handle that well. It is at a good price point though and CUTE to some people. The previous generation MR2 was more refined, had a kinda-Ferrari-esque body that looked neat and was a bit more developed - unfortunately was out at a time when sports cars were not in much demand.

The first MR2, the original flying doorstop wedge, was pretty competent and handled very well. However, it was somewhat limited by the engine and it was never developed much more over time by Toyota - because they wanted their sports car to be the Supra.

Porsche midengine cars (not their racing cars - all in another league) start with Porsche 001 - the first version of the 356 which was midengine - great handling and a wonderful car. But Ferry Porsche wanted his cars to have a back seat capability so he put the engine out in the back (ala his design for the volkswagen). Later, the 1970 914 was an attempt to create an affordable entry level sports car, with 2 trunks too. Best selling Porsche of all time, not too well built because of low cost/partly VW engineered/70's materials. But if you get to drive a well sorted version, especially with the Porsche 6 cylinder motor, the car is a blast to drive - imagine > 150 HP and 2200 pounds curb weight! Plus it is a little more direct and raw compared to the cars of today (none of this stinkin' air conditioning and power everything stuff!).

Today's Boxster is a modern, well thought out and well engineered Mid-Engine sports car for a particular price point. Many can argue about the overall cost and what one should get for the money. But drive one, just get in and attack any twisty, up and down, demanding road and you'll see and feel where all the engineering went. I have a Boxster S and it makes you feel good about driving and enjoying youself with a very, very good driver's car (kinda like a good audio system, eh?). Most drivers who use their Boxsters have what Porsche enthusiast know well - a PermaGrin!!

Kind Regards,

Bart
