and Demo'd the 5's.These were very revealing live sounding speakers with the proper amp/s. As for their sound, these are still the best speaker I have heard with the 5's being the best at the time. There is something to the 1st order crossovers that sounds just right. The Vandersteen's though not recommended by Richard would really turn into something when driven with a higher output amp.
The 3A's I had were really nice sounding with the Edge M8 amp I had paired with them, but when I brought home a pair of Classe M700 monoblocks @ 700 watts 8ohms to audition, The Vandersteen's transformed into something really really nice that I had never heard in any speaker. I was really happy with the sound but on the cautious side due to that amount of power, one slip on the hand on a LP forgetting to turn down the preamp and disaster would happen.
The only down side was the Vandersteen speaker sound were slightly on the "Laid Back" side which I wasn't used too but with those Classe amps it was a non issues.
Til this day, I still miss the magic these Vandersteen speaker produced. I haven't heard their newer stuff so I can't comment on them.
