Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

How do you measure a speaker cone's surface area?

You asked for the surface area of a cone. You did not ask for the effective radiating area of a loudspeaker diaphragm.

From a physics standpoint, these are two different things.

The effective radiating area of a direct radiator driver can be considered to be Pi*r2 of the cone diameter, plus, as Tomservo noted, some portion of the surround (which will vary based upon the type of surround, and varies with frequency, but in any case, is negligible for drivers where the diameter is large compared to the surround).

Cone surface area is a little more complicated, but is still solid geometry. I don't have the formula at hand, but you can probably find it fairly easily.
