Do you have access to Baltic Birch?
It is hard to be that for loudspeaker cabinets especially ported bass cabinets where the cabinet's rigidity is important.
The up side for compressed fiber like mdf etc is it machines faster on the cnc than Baltic and if painted, one can machine it smooth and the exposed area is easy to fill / seal before painting.
For Baltic Birch, i rarely paint that, it looks great with a spar polyurethane finish but sealing the end grain takes an extra step or two.
Here is a bass guitar cabinet i made in the wood shop with that finish.
If you elect to try that kind of finish look for how to video's on a polyurethane called Gleem2, it is close to amazing.
