Horns, while possibly not having the smoothest frequency response, will have the dynamic linearity you crave. There are some very good ones that don't have significant horn coloration as well.
Keep in mind that the amplifiers in the ATCs are an X factor in the design that no one knows, in isolation, how good they are. A lot of the comments I hear about "in yer face" sound, could possibly be laid at the feet of the Class A/B amplifiers that are built in. Not sure if ATC designs those themselves or sources them.
IMO, no low sensitivity speaker (less than 90dB/watt) will ever sound as dynamic as a good high sensitivity speaker (greater than 95dB). Thermal compression makes it physics a reality regardless of how much power you apply.
