Interesting thoughts and have heard this before. It is certainly a common argument that studio speakers are too truthful for audiophiles, but I dont think this is true. I think "revealing flaws" is identical to "revealing details". That was Billy Woodman's point.So I do take exception with your statement: "There is a difference and long may that be so, as most domestic listeners don't want the "warts and all" shouted at them, whereas that's exactly what the editing engineer needs to do his job effectively. As one slightly tongue-in-cheek contributor to a pro audio magazine said "Studio speakers are designed to sound bad, whereas domestic ones are designed to sound good". I paraphrase."
I think the error in this statement is that once it the warts are exposed, and fixed, it is no longer there to be found. If its done correctly you no longer hear flaws or errors. It isnt like the recording engineer hears an error and leaves it in for you to find. If you find it, that means the engineer missed it, the mastering engineer missed it, the artist missed it. Egg on faces all around! That's how people get fired. So saying "Studio speakers are designed to make it sound bad" is completely wrong and the polar opposite of "truth". They should reveal what it really sounds like, not change it!
If home speakers makes bad recordings sound good, that means its changing something, not "repairing something". This is the crux of the matter: you cannot make a certain mix sound "better" on certain kinds of speakers without it also changing mixes that were not flawed, that were exactly what the artist intended. That change, whatever it is, applies to everything the speaker touches. Its not intelligent change, guided change or inspired change, its blanket indescriminate change to everything! So I think most ATC fans would say "I don't want the speaker to change the EQ of the record, I dont want the speakers to hide details. Let me hear it as it is! Leave it alone!Brad.
