Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

They are iconic loudspeakers that don't sound very good but have tremendous cachet

They've been collectible for a long time and will remain so for at least a few more years, 'til the boomers have all shuffled off this mortal coil.

They demand high and increasing prices because of the above plus the number of "real" JBL L100 in the wild is only decreasing over time. There is, of course, a "modern" L100 reboot (ironically named JBL L100 Classic ) which is by all accounts superior to the original in every respect (except sensitivity).

All this being said, it's analogous to many collectible cars. Compare, say, a 1966 Mustang to a 2023 Mustang. The latter is quantitatively superior in every respect to the former, and is also better built, (likely) more reliable, and (almost certainly) will hold up far better. The latter is also inarguably safer and likely more energy-efficient, to boot.

Now , compare the going price for a restored 1966 vs. an "as new" (but used) 2023.

See? It ain't just the JBL "Century"! ;)

all the best,
mrh
