Standard Business model suggests that Cost of production (parts, labour, packagings , premises, taxes, profit :-).
Comprise 20% of MSRP.
So your 1000$ speakers cost ~ 200$ to produce.
Given these real life constraints. Their designers go to large efforts to maximize quality given the peanut$ they are allowed, Sometimes they succeed sometimes not.

Which is Why upgrading drivers in cheap speakers (when done with knowledge :-) can and usually does give significant improvement.
But it's not simply a driver swap, as Crossovers need appropriate upgrading as well.

As for Boxes ? These actually give Little, beyond low bass effects.. but that's HERESY!
