In a way the progenitors of the Harbeth HL1, the 1st Harbeth speaker were the Rogers LS3/6 and the Spendor BC1. When Rogers took on the license to build the speaker they asked if they could add a super tweeter because the Celestion HF1300 tweeter in the 2 way LS3/6 died around 14 kHz . The BBC allowed the change and the Celestion HF2000 tweeter was added to extend the response. The BC1 was a design based on the LS3/6 research(Spencer Hughes was part of the LS3/6 development and was originally a 2 way also with the Celestion HF1300 but early on added an STC super tweeter also to extend response.
The HL1 was the 1st product of Dudley Harwood and was a 2 way similar to the Rogers and Spendor but using a soft dome Audax that did extend beyond the HF1300. But at some point the HL1 followed the 2 way plus super tweeter of its ancestors probably because of the heritage of the production BC1 and LS3/6 and probably due to some performance advantages. For one thing although this is somewhat minor the super tweeter is only 3/4" and smaller than the main tweeters which does slightly improve dispersion in the top octave.
