Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Which again raises the question, why do it?

At age 70, I can still hear out to 12kHz on speakers and 16kHz on headphones. Because of the inherent shrillness in a number of CDs I otherwise enjoy, I tend to voice my DIY speakers with a slightly shelved-down treble response.

I've only used "supertweeters" in a couple of projects where a "full range" driver handles everything from about 250Hz out to maybe 12kHz. It's really an "extended midrange 3-way," with a larger woofer filling in the LF and a small dome or planar tweeter adding a bit of air and sparkle up top. Beamy as hell, and best suited for nearfield listening.

In a conventional 2-way speaker with an adequate tweeter, I see no reason to confuse matters with an additional HF driver.
