RE: I wonder if it's possible to know exactly what is creating that "fine detail and nuance"

I've had numerous dynamic-driver dipoles and none of them had the nuance and detail of the Quad ESLs - designs based around Lowthers with bass augmentation, Supravox field-coil drivers, and non-HE drivers, from wide/short (JE Labs) baffles to tall/thin (Lowther USA) baffles, DIY and commercial.

I've also had all the Maggies except the 20 series. They have GREAT tonal balance and dynamics, and are incredibly enjoyable. But as soon as you listen Quad electrostats afterwards (which I did) you realize they threw away all of the fine detail.

I am pretty convinced that the detail & nuance of the Quads is "due to the incredible lightness of the drivers" because that the attribute they have which no other speakers do (excluding other ESLs).
