I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm wondering if the tweeter position might be for the purpose of phase linearity. If the speakers are setup so that the tweeters are on the outside edge, assuming they are designed for left and right placement, then the mid/bass driver would be closer to your ears. In other words, I'm assuming one speaker has the tweeter to the left and the other has the tweeter to the right of mid/bass driver. Usually, the mid/bass driver needs to be closer to your ears than the tweeter for proper phase linearity. This is just a guess, though. I really don't know.
