The advances in driver materials and design over the past 10 years have been mind-blowing.
The Purifi 6.5-inch dedicated midrange used in at least one of Jim Salk's designs has the lowest distortion Erin's Audio Corner on YouTube has ever measured, and it has the highest Agility Factor I have ever computed.
DUUH, seeing as Purifi makes a 5.25-inch woofer mid with just about exactly the same frontal area as a LS3/5A woofer... it would seem to me to be a no-brainer.
Further, TPCD woofer diaphragms come as thin as TWO TENTHS of one Millimeter. As light and almost as stiff as Berylium, at 66% of the cost.
ciao,
john
