A transmission line can completely absorb the back wave. It's just that bass lines traditionally are left open to add extra bass like a reflex port. They don't have to. They can be closed and that was mentioned in the early Wireless World articles on lines. Or there is the SEAS Thor line done by D'Appolito where the end of the line is stuffed like an aperiodic loading(Dynaco A25) so the line has no sonic output but is a pressure release. When you look at the impedance curve the lower rise is completely suppressed indicating no output.
