Thoughts on describing distortion in loudspeakers?

The two Stereophile reviews of the Advent loudspeakers are interesting. The first by JG Holt describes the Advent's distortion as taking a back seat in transparency, "playing through a velvet fog".

Thirty years later Bob Reina described it more specifically as "a textural quality in the lower highs". "A grayish, grainy quality that stood out on every recording". And Atkinson's measurements noted the peakiness of the treble with a large peak at 13k which he noticed added a whistling quality.

Are Reina's ears better than Holt's? Why did he more specifically notice the most irritating distortion?
