Another great DIY prodject is modding old equipment. The most famous of course is the Dynaco ST70 but I've had great results with a pair of Eico HF20s. They started out a pair of rust buckets but with some clean up and just a powersupply upgrade(choke and caps) the sound was greatly improved. I then switched output tubes from 6L6s to 6CK4s for another sound improvement(but drop in power to 10watts).I would trade my expensive and much better built MAC40s before these elcheapo but better sounding junkers. And I hope to change the outputs to 6B4Gs some day.Another great sleeper is a Stromberg Carlson 220, a total peice of junk at first view but get rid of the horrible face, ditch the preamp, wire it as just a power amp and improve the power supply. The little 12 watt 7408/6V6 amp Becomes a supper sounding amp that would cause many a big spender to loose a bit of sleep.
I know the above examples describe P-P pentode amps and we all like SET DHTs better but they are easy, cheap and fun prodjects that greatly improve the sound of what might be considered mid-fi junkers. Sometimes becomeing giant killers.
DIY gives the audio hobbiest great control and a lot of fun and satisfaction. There is always someone trying to put the hobby down. I once read some manufacturers discription of a "cutting edge" design to find it the same design type used for 40 or more years.
Truth is there is a lot of great audio today But also a lot of BS. DIY,anyway you cut it, makes the hobbie that much more fun.
