In Defence of Peter Azcel

Dear Carcass,

I knew Peter Azcel around the time he started The Audio Critic and I have to say that there was nothing wrong with his ears at the time, as his endorsements of the Electrocampaniet 25/25, the Spatial Coherence pre-amplifier, the Rappaport pre- and power amplifiers, the original Octave Research, and several other historically important products, most of which would stand up well in comparison to what was recommended by other magazines at the time and any time if my comparisons are anything to go by.

At that time he identified several ideas, such as no feedback, that have proved to have long legs historically, I was strongly influenced by much of what Peter found in the sound of the equipment he reviewed in the early days and owned most of it as well, he always tried to work out why this was better than that and I think that was how he ended up believing in all the simplistic theories put forward by Carver and others.

I was saddened by the fact that Peter increasingly became convinced by "the flat earth measurement society" led by Bob Carver who was, and probably still is, convinced that the transfer function of any type of amplifier can be studied and replicated by something much much cheaper so there is no need for tubes whatsoever.

Had Carver been right it would have made a major breakthrough in Audio, unfortunately he was not!

Peter made an important contribution prior to his involvement with Carver and the speaker company the name of which escapes me at the moment, he made some important discoveries in manufacturers like Electrocompaniet and Rappaport.

History may not judge Peter kindly, but I think the above is worth remembering.

Sincerely,
Peter Qvortrup
