RE: Audio Note E and NAIM

It sucks to get a "depends' answer. Bob Neil and LFDS have both tried Naim with the AN speakers I have not but amplifiers make a huge difference even within the Audio Note line-up. Depending which AN E (copper or silver or hemp or HE drivers or not. Naim amps I believe run in class B which is likely the anti-thesis of Peter Qvortrup's view of what good amplification is all about (though I think Naim sounds pretty good in general compared to a lot of stuff and for the money). how they'll react is another matter.

I had a Sugden integrated amp with my J's and I enjoyed the sound quite a lot but the particular sugden (A48b) is known to sound valve like(a little veiled but lush and very listenable and inviting.

More recently I heard Sim Audio Moon entry level kit with the E/LX Hemp HE and the results were quite excellent but in a slightly more "powerful brute force" kind of way. Still excellent results and I listened for over 2 hours. Nothing there would drive me from the room screaming as many a SS amps tend to do.

So the answer is this: While SE tubes from An may be the "best" match with other maker's SETs also being better as an "ideal" match - I'd still rather listen to an AN E with SS (even if it's NOT ideal) than most speakers out there even with their best matched SS gear. To me the entry level AN E is a a world class loudspeaker that can go up against anyone else's anything at any price and never be "outclassed" in terms of musical enjoyment and just getting on with the business of letting the artist into the room.

The great thing about Audio Note speakers and the company in general is that even in their level 2 set-ups the music comes first and you don't really know what you're missing until you level up. That's similar with when I had the Sugden - great match but the OTO fits it like a nice pair of cozy slippers. Go up the amplifier line and the cozy slippers add a nice helping of fur. Analogies abound.

I'd look at the OTO SE (maybe darker lusher romantic - a nice Port) and the Soro (punchier upbeat and more powerful - A fine red) and see which one you like better.
