with the existing sub, nirvana approacheth!
A big box like the Arden is not gonna work in that room, a pair of Tannoy IIILZ's with the 10-inch gold or even a 10inch HPD plus sealed encl. would be about right. The trouble with box spkrs is their horizontal dispersion which will create early reflections in such rooms. Even the horn-loaded Tannoy tweeters?! yep!
I really do think the Quad 57's are the way to go, even 63's. But, with either ELS - do get them in good nick - and put them up on stands. For the 57's the side profile/arc should be set so it is vertical/aimed at your ears, for the 63 the central annulus should be ~at ear height.
Solid baffle front type 'stands' are best IMO, as they support the bass, and will minimise any dips from the greater height. IE a shallow BOX on its side open to the rear with three verticals (one central) viz |\ ?
Set them up with the outer edge right against the wall, when they will do 40 hz even in that room, about 1/3rd down the longer walls, but aimed in use a proper 'stereo' disc - say a Hyperion CD engineered by Tony Faulkiner - until it snaps into focus.
And then run the sub so it just fills in below them, try the middle of the wall behind them / right beside/behind your seat.
IE do NOT use the sub's HP filter on the sub xover to filter the feed to the Quad amps and 57's, it's un-necessary with such low power amps. Rather, if the sub has L & R high level inputs, use them and feed the sub from the QuadII's. Load-wise the II's won't mind at all!
There was an article in HFN&RR (ages ago) by Christopher Breunig - one of their record reviewers, or Martin Colloms or John Atkinson, about running the 57's on stands and getting rid of the hessian padding from the back, too!
I have a smallish L-shaped room!
