Subwoofers are tricky to integrate with Quads, because they have such low coloration (no box resonances), they are so fast and speak "with one voice" so to speak, and finally because they have a dipole radiation pattern, whereas almost all subwoofers are cones in a box and so radiate omnidirectionally in the bass. I actually built my own dipole subwoofer for my Quads but they work very well without the subwoofer.
In terms of maintenance, if you have an old pair it is worthwhile getting the panels replaced, especially if they exhibit decreased sensitivity which is a sign they are reaching their natural lifespan. There's lots of info on the web about this, check at the Quad ESL-57 Hotline website for lots of links to info on panels, repair, etc.
