Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Cruel, wasn't it?

Here's where it all started.

When I was 16 my dad took me to the local hifi store to buy me my first real stereo. A birthday present.

I fell in love with the sound of the ARs and wanted them badly. It was my first audio epiphany. But the salesperson talked my dad into JBL L88s to go with the flea powered Sony receiver they were selling on special. I never forgave the guy, and never bought anything from them again. My dad was not into electronics and didn't really know one from the other, never could even hook a stereo up. That task always fell to me.

I don't know why, but I always paid close attention to the way music *sounded*, either on record or in the venue in which it was being performed. I was a singer, pianist and organist in grade and high school, so I was used to listening. The local symphony used to rehearse occassionally in our auditorium. I heard lots of live music. I was always aware of the acoustic properties of the various churches, theaters and halls in which we performed.

And I always wanted a good sound system.

My second epiphany was hearing Maggies but that's a story for another day.
