RE: Carolina Audio JTMs

I've had the Carolina Audio JTM2s for a few years. I understand how you feel about their sound. I'll admit that I struggled with them at first. Their presentation was so different than what I was used to that it took me some time to appreciate what these speakers could do. Ronnie Thackery of Carolina Audio was extremely patient with me during this process. He was always willing to offer advice and suggestions. That's one of the best things about buying Carolina Audio products. You get to talk at length with Ronnie. I've learned a lot from him. He's very knowledgeable, helpful, and clearly committed to providing a high-quality product to his customers.

For me, the defining characteristic of the speakers is their sense of openness. With the right positioning and amplification, these speakers give me a spacious, un-boxy sound. On a number of recordings my attention is not drawn to the cabinets or drivers, but solely to the music. That they can do this successfully in my rather small Manhattan apartment is a testament to good design. That they can do this with a single small driver per speaker is even more amazing, at least to me. The bass is taut and tuneful, if not the lowest. What's there works for me. I've had speakers which are perhaps a bit more refined, and more extended at the frequency extremes. However, the bottom line is that the JTM2s provide me with more satisfaction, and the least amount of listener fatigue. In that sense they remind me of my Spica TC50s, which I still have. They have some resemblance to the Spicas in that way, although their bass is much, much better.

I've tried other speakers since getting the JTM2s, one fairly recently. I bought them because I'd heard they were a very good match for my Shindo Aurieges L preamp and Montille amp. All I know is that even after four months of constant repositioning I just couldn't get them to sound as I wanted. After a while I stopped trying and stopped listening to my two-channel system. Frankly, it was a relief to sell them and go back to the JTM2s. I'm surprised that they work so well with my Shindo 15WPC amp, as they aren't especially efficient. It helps that I can't play music at loud levels, and that the room is rather small. Perhaps it also helps that there's no crossover. I know they'd probably benefit from more power, but I like the Shindo gear so much that I'm willing to make the compromise.

Anyway, thanks for your post. For me it's nice to see Ronnie's speakers getting some recognition.
