Okay, I still owe Bamberg a review of these beautiful speakers, which I own, but they are amazing. I'll do a complete review very soon but you can follow the link below to give you a good idea as to what they look like and how they measure. The series 2's have incredible pinpoint imaging, throw a huge (wide and deep) soundstage, and have excellent dynamics. They "disappear" more than any speaker I have ever heard in my system. I love their refinement and, when I want to ROCK, they are capable of playing concert level spl's.My system consists of MTM monitors perched on top of subwoofer stands. Because the monitors are not asked to play deep bass, they are capable of producing very high spl's without any compression. The bass units were designed to be used with these monitors so integration is excellent. The whole system (EQ, crossovers, etc.) is controlled by the DCX2496 which comes pre-programmed by Phil Bamberg. The speakers are completely active (they have no passive crossover components...okay, that's saying the same thing). You need 6 channels of amplification to run the system but it sounds great with an inexpensive Outlaw 7100 (the amp I used before I found a multi-channel Coda monitors/Aragon bass). I believe active speakers are more efficient than passive because passive components rob a speaker of efficiency. I'm not sure about this but the speakers are 89db efficient.
The dual-subwoofers (that act as stands) are attractive and perform extremely well. Bass is very deep (see website for measurements) and very balanced in room. My previous system used one large subwoofer and I now understand why some people are always touting dual subs! In addition, I could not get these subs to bottom out no matter how hard I tried. I'm powering them with an Aragon 4004, an amp that seems well suited for this application.
The DCX is also a bargain at $260 through Bamberglab.com. You can find one cheaper but Phil B, tests every unit to make sure it is working properly and he pre-programs the DCX to work with his speakers. He also supplies a cable to allow you to plug it into your computer and a disc with the crossover program in case you need it down the road. He made all of the cables for the system (you need balanced to RCA cables if you don't have balanced inputs on your amp and outputs on your preamp). I also had Phil install resistors on my IC's to allow me to use the attenuation on the DCX as a volume control and a digital cable to allow me to use the internal DAC's in the DCX. It sounds as good as my $1000+ CDP when used as a DAC. The DCX also allows you to set different parameters for your speakers and different slopes if you wish and to do quick A/B comparisons between each setting. I programmed a BBC dip setting, a setting with boosted bass just for fun. It's easy to change and save settings and I'm only scratching the surface of what this thing can do. Plus, if you don't want to tweek it, you can just plug and play.
Also, if you don't want to use a fully active system, BESL also offers passive crossover version of all of their speakers. You could always upgrade to active later if you wish. The prices on the website are for passive crossover versions. The active versions (since they don't have crossovers) are less expensive but require a DCX (available pre-programmed) to operate.
Anyway, this is just a suggestion. I'm going to have a get-together at my house to show people this system. Phil has a pair of demo speakers that he is sending around for people to demo. They don't have the subwoofer stands and are not active but should give you a good idea as to what Bamberglab.com speakers sound like. Why haven't most people heard of BESL? Phil Bamberg is an engineer (electrical and mechanical), a very good one, and a music lover. He's NOT a marketer and doesn't appear to be one anytime soon. If you are in the Indianapolis, Indiana, and want to hear an amazing system, fully active that sounds more like "real" live music than anything I have heard, give him a call for a demo. Bring your favorite CD's because you are in for a treat!
One more thing, I am not associated with Bamberglab in any way. I paid full price for my system and don't get discounts on anything. I'm just a satisfied and extremely enthusiastic customer. I sold most of my system after hearing Phil's system in Indianapolis. Hopefully, I'll be able to have a group of people over to my house in the Chicago area before mid-July when my wife and I have our first baby and my listening will be confined to low level or phones!
Cheers!
Jack
