You'll probably require a horn based system, quite efficient, vintage or new probably won't matter too much, but the vintage will be quite a bit less money than high quality modern horn based monitors. So all of the "horny" concepts in the earlier replies are possible.
Of them, for your purposes, I like:
Klipsch Cornwalls - great value, do a little tweaking on them and they'll sound quite presentable and give you the impact you're looking for...
or
JBL L200 or JBL L300 or comparable professional models - more expensive alternative but these are tremendously musical and dynamic monitors that tracked and mixed a lot of rock records in the 60s and 70s...
or
Altec Voice of Theater models from 60's or 70's (I have not heard these myself, so my recommendation is based entirely upon "heresay" and reputation...but much loved like the JBLs above.)Now, since you're now going to have VERY efficient horn based speakers, you can seriously consider moderately powerful push pull tube amplification which should create a nice synergy with your speakers and still allow you to ROCK! Consider vintage EL84 amps from Scott, Eico, Fisher. Consider vintage 7591 amps from Fisher or Scott. Consder all sorts of vintage or modern EL34 amps.
My own system has evolved to high efficiency speakers (Tannoy System DMT15 MKII monitors) which are 98db efficient but even with quality solid state amplification (NAIM) they still do not demonstrate the striking dynamics of the horn based systems. On the other hand, they enjoy other audio characteristics (finesse, imaging, harmonic rightness, etc.) that that "reasonably priced" horn based systems cannot deliver.
