What about the Paradigm Monitor 90p? It's priced under your budget, and would probably provide the SLAM you're looking for. Plus, it goes LOW... 22hz LF extension. Wish I had the room for something like these. The nice thing is you can really tune the bass response with the powered bass modules. I heard them briefly at a dealer in a room that was just too small. They seem promising though.
