Re: ProAcs-vs- Gallo Ref 3's

I'll try. My speakers went from ProAc Response 2s to Response 3s to Gallo Nucleus Ultimates to Gallo Ref 3s, and the Response 2s now live with the guy who designed and built my SET amps so I still hear them occasionally. The Response 2s are fine speakers but they sound very boxy to me now after owning two models of the "boxless" Gallos. Also, I like the Gallo CDT tweeter much more than the ProAc dome. And finally, the Gallos "disappear" to a much greater degree than the ProAcs and have a terrific soundstage.

Regarding your concerns, the Ref 3 height is adjustable and they sound just as "big" as the 4-ball, 58" high Ultimates, if not bigger. My room is 18 x 40, with an"L" off the back that makes for even more volume. Audio folks and "civilians" alike have marveled at the musicality, unusual clarity (again, partly because of no box), and punchiness of the Ref 3s in my large room. And they're driven by 12 wpc SET monoblocks.

Regarding the bass: I've driven the second voice coils with an external stereo amp very successfully, but I like them better with my pair of HSU subs driven by the same amp, crossed over (in both cases) at 43 Hz. Quite honestly, I'm dying to try the Gallo sub amp, as soon as one arrives at the dealer. The Ref 3 bass is pretty darn good without augmentation, though.

I hope you have a chance to hear these things. If you buy them, I think you'll be entranced by them (once the hellacious break-in period is over).
