Obviously you're more demanding of your equipment than I am -- in fact, I listen to a high proportion of chamber music! Not long ago I had the input capacitors upgrade from the 5900 uF to 22,000 uF. However with my style of listening the improvement was negligible: bear in mind the PL 400's damping factor is 1000.
What sold me on the NAD C270 wasn't the bass -- which is warmer and looser than the Phase -- but rather the it's relative freedom from grain and harshness, and greater transparency.
Another Inmate recommended a comprehensive set of upgrades to the PL 400, but given I'm not a DIY'er they would have cost me far more than the price of the NAD.
