Re: Ohm F's, (full-range Walsh-drivers)

The F's provide the widest, deepest soundstage of any speaker that i've ever heard. They can shake the house ( in terms of deep bass ) at low spl's and float an image across the soundstage like no other speaker i've ever encountered*. Then again, that's why i own two pairs of them : )

As far as the newer Ohm "Walsh" based designs, their sound is phenomenally different. That's because they are basically using conventional woofers that radiate into the box. What you hear is the back-wave of the driver leaking out of the basket. This in itself presents non-linear frequency response due to the size and shape of the "vent holes" in the basket. On top of that, the radiation pattern is altered due to the blocking of the rear section inside of the sealed canister that houses the drivers. As such, those that are trying to recreate the sonics and imagery of the direct radiating Walsh radiators as found in the Ohm A and Ohm F are in for a big surprise when auditioning the newer Ohm designs. * I've heard the MBL Radialstrahler's, but not under good conditions. I've been told that these are capable of excellent soundstaging, which is probably due to the radiation pattern that they present. Like the earlier Ohm's the MBL's are also TRUE "omni's".
