The eico ST40 isn't a crap amp. That isn't your problem. I have the more deluxe ST70, but many prefer the ST40. I've heard amps costing thousands that aren't as good. Very good amps if in good repair. However, the ST70 - and I believe the ST40 - have a nonfunctional loudness switch due apparently to a feud between the engineering and marketing departments at the time. There's an easy fix posted online somewhere if you do a google search.
The yamaha CD player could very well be a problem, especially if it's and older one. I suggest a modern DVD/multi-format player as a source.
WRT speakers for rock, I don't really think Axiom or Quad are a great choice. IMHO, an old 3 way with a big woofer like AR, Advent, or JBL100's will provide the most musical satisfaction. I don't really know a commercial speaker still made in this style, but there must be some. There are certainly kits and DIY plans on the net.
BTW, I use homebrewed monitors with my eico. These have focal 8" woofers and G3 ribbon tweeters. Closest thing I could find commercially is the 'Jupiter' kit sold by Zalytron.com.
