What equipment are you running your Quad's into?I own the Quad 21Ls (Piano Black as well) here and have heard the 11/12L's extensively and have encountered none of the weaknesses you are describing - in fact with bright recordings the Quad's can sheer your ears off ;) I would call the Quad's many things, all positive, but never flat.
I've gone through a lot of equipment and wire on these to find something that blends well with them - they are far more transparent than most speakers you are likely to find in their price range and are very sensitive to upstream components - so before you ditch them assuming its the speakers - what components are you running?
