For me, the only tone controls of real value are the ones which allow for a reduction in the upper mid range area, something which hinges about 1500hz but doesn't extend above, say 5000hz. You don't find them on many Pre's, which usually have just bass and high's. The problem with tilt controls is that they effect the entire range. The old Apt preamp got it right (as well as some Mac's) they had a mid-range tone control which hinged at 1500K but did not extend into the highs, just created a dip to get rid of glare, sibilance, etc. Easy to do with an outboard equalizer in a tape loop - and then when you don't need it you can take it completely out of the system by flipping a switch.
