It appears that on my Van Alstine T7-EC the tone controls can be turned off. It looks like off is basically, the default position. I was a bit confused at first because turning the bass and treble knobs did nothing until the tone control was engaged. It also has something labled "filter" which can be turned on and off.

The thing I like about the T7 (not that I have experimented with an abundance of pre-amps), is that, so far, it seems to be the most neutral pre I have heard. It doesnt seem to color the music in any way that I can determine. I probably dont have as good an ear as some of you guys, but thats how it seems to me.

VA's pre's - like most of his equipment - doesnt seem to be that flashy but they seem to get the job done. I also like all of the inputs you get with the T7 and that was one of the deciding factors for going with this unit (also, his summer special of a free phone pre-amp helped!). I can't understand some of the high end units that have only two or three inputs. I've got 6 of my 8 filled already, and it will be 7 when I finally see what vinyl has to offer.

Now, my question...what do you guys mean when you talk about 1st, 2nd, 4th level of crossover, where speakers are concerned? What kind of crossover did my Klipsch RF-7's use? What about my Von Schweikert VR-7's?

Thanks,
Dave
