Take a speaker from the list and do a search. Read the reviews. Search on speakers that it is compared to. Make a list of speakers you are interested in. When the come up on Ebay, Audiogon, Craigslist or Audio Asylum classified at a reasonable price, scoop 'em up for extended in home audition. If you don't like 'em sell 'em.

You may have to decide which is more important to you: smooth frequency response or good dynamics.

Paradigm Atom is one of the safest recommendations in budget speakerdom. Read Wes Phillips review at Stereophile. On the second page he compares it to the PSB Alpha B1. He seems to prefer the midrange of one and the dynamics of the other.

The second group listed are vintage, you can get some great deals but be careful some need restoration work. I prefer local sales where you can audition the speaker first.
