Well if you can believe it TAS '--Neil Gadner (in the most recent "Golden Ear" awards edition) included the PSB Alpha B1. Pretty sure this would be a great place to start. Also look at another Canadian speaker, the Athena AS-B1.2 (from PSB's nemesis API), and some of the Energy's from the same company.
If the Tektons are a consideration, check out the planet10 hifi "Fonkens" a DIY single driver type, with a modded driver. There are a huge amount of speakers in the $300-500. You don't really indicate your musical tastes.
Single drivers (efficient ones) often like amplifiers with a low dampening factor, so SE tubes, and T-amps can work wonders.
If efficiency isn't a consideration, Carver digital amps (and the Audiosource ones) are often for sale on epay for $300. or the Panny XR series of receivers, which can be optimized for 2 channel audio.
