high end wide range bass drivers

I'm designing a 'high end' full range system, probably with PHL mids (possibly open baffle) and for tweeters either Focal titanium or Raven ribbons. All these have 95 db efficiency, are very smooth and have very fast transient responses. I will drive the bass with a Bryston 250 wpc, and the rest with Musical Fidelity monoblocks.

I'm looking for a bass driver(s) to cover from 300 Hz down, preferably to say 18Hz.
I could use the excellent PHL 10" woofer down to about 40-50 Hz, and a sub below, but if one driver (maybe a pair to give 95 db unboosted output) could do 18-300 Hz really well, I'd use only a single type, to eliminate one crossover (and save the cost of the PHL 10").

A PR allows a smaller enclosure, but at the cost of reduced dynamics.
So I think I'll use a bass reflex, for the added efficiency & extension; with a total Q of probably 0.707.
Ideally I would avoid EQ (because it diminishes transient response), but more realistically use just say 3-4 db. I thought the port could be tuned to 18 Hz. I don't mind 'reasonably' large enclosures; if particularly large say over say 3-4 cubic feet to place them against the wall or in a corner, if this doesn't make the bass boomy?

I'm open to the best construction enclosure - will want it well damped eg probably two layers of different type of woods, lined and braced.
Alternatively a length of concrete pipe could be a simple cheap inert enclosure, say on 6" legs with say a driver at one end and a port at the other. This requires the driver to be suitable for horizontal mounting.

Which bass drivers would best do this?

Thanks

Richard
