There aren't as many companies making their own as people think. There are also differences between actually making your own drivers, and having another company make them for you (to me, if another vendor makes the driver, but it's still unique to the company's product, then it's their own). Many of the "boutique" manufacturer are using off-the-shelf drivers, or slightly modified off-the-shelf drivers. Some like to call them their own drivers because they might get the voice coil wound slightly differently, or they might simply get their name stamped in the frame. But these are still just minor modifications, not making your own.
As for those that make their own, this is who I know of who "mostly" do it (I say mostly because there might be someone in their line that uses an off-the-shelf or modified unit, but for the most part . . .).
- Vivid Audio (thoroughly unique drivers)
- Magico (midrange and woofers are quite unique)
- Paradigm (have made their own for the longest time)
- Axiom (a long, long time too)
- Definitive Technology (just had lunch with their designer about this topic)
- GoldenEar Technology
- Revel
- JBL
- TAD (they have a beryllium concentric no one has)
- Magnepan
- PSB
- Monitor Audio
- MartinLogan
- Cabasse
- KEF
- Dynaudio
- Focal
- VandersteenUndoubtedly, there are several others, but those are the ones that pop to mind.
