RE: HHR Exotic Speakers

The issue i had with my Walsh 3s was with one, and sometimes both cutting out at medium to high volumes. It turned out to be their protection device(s), which (pardon my non-electronics background parlance) were some sort of "thermal choke". Ohm used these power limiting devices to protect the speakers from overload in stead of fuses, when they received too much current, they would increase their resistance (sort of the opposite of a circuit breaker), thus lowering the speaker's output, then once cooled down, they were supposed to return to normal... apparently they sometimes don't return fully. At least that's how they were described to me, don't recall what John actually said they were called. He sent a pair of these things that looked like big black film caps to me, and I replaced them, solving the problem. They were near the binding posts, down in the cabinet on mine, but I think they are in the "cans" on some models. Otherwise, I've never had a problem with any of the Ohms I've had over the years! I don't own the 3s any more, the only Wash speakers I currently have are 2s, and Sound Cylinders... although, as I think about it, I may still have some 1s around here, but if so, I haven't seen them in quite a while. I have WAY too many speakers - a bit of an obsession actually, and I often "find" one while digging out another!

I don't think the latter "Walsh series", as we've been discussing/debating here, are particularly good with most tube amps, but I have used a few on them without any "problems". IME Ohm Walsh speakers in general, are not particularly sensitive, and seem to respond best to amps that can "swing a lot of current", and I wouldn't recommend most tubes, or lightweight SS amps, particularly receivers. The amp doesn't need to be outrageously expensive though, I've used B&Ks, Haflers, and Audires with very good results - though Adcoms didn't work well for me on them. I'm currently loving the sound of my Walsh 2s on a Luxman M-12.
