RE: HHR Exotic Speakers

I'm well aware of how the Fs and more current Walsh speakers work, having also owned Fs, as well as Walsh 1s,2s,3s,&4s (still have a pair of 2s & Sound Cylinders). I've also talked to John Stohnbeen, several years ago, when I had an issue with my 3s. I still stand by my assertion that they are, in affect omnidirectional speakers in as much as they do most definitely produce front, side & rear radiation in phase. just because they have chosen to damp down the rear SOME, doesn't negate the "open" sound affect of such a design, although it may diminish it to some extent. Omnidirectional speakers, like di-poles, or bi-poles, tend to add an "airy" quality to the sound as one of their strongest virtues. Because much of that affect comes from the mid/upper mid range reflecting off the rear & side walls, crossing over to a direct firing tweeter has the desirable affect of improving imaging by limiting the highs from too much reflection... potentially causing muddying, or even echo affects. Many well known di-poles have used damping on the rear of either their high frequency drivers, or all across the back of their panels to similar affect, but few would argue that Acoustats, or Quad ESLs were NOT di-poles because of that!
