will sound better than a stock 405 with its primitive LM301 op amp. The McIntosh should work just fine. You might post this on the Planar forum where you'll find Quad gurus like Kentaja who have an intimate knowledge of the product. I seem to recall he uses Audio Research REF300 amps with his having the same power output.
